In the following reaction,, oxidation number ofa)N changes from -2 to ...
Since NH4+ and NO3- are 2 different radicals so we need to find the oxidation no. of both the N atoms separately in both radicals which is ... NH4+= +1=x+1×4(bcz oxidation state of hydrogen is taken +I've if it is joined to a non metal and -1. if it is joined to a metal eg in NaH). so x=-3 similarly for NO2- -1=x-2×2. x=+3. and for N2. 0 on each nitrogen (bcz its a free molecule) as we can see there are 2 nitrogen in reactant and 2 in product means one of the nitrogen of reactant got converted from -3 to 0 (N of NH4+) and other from +3 to 0( N of NO2-).
