Why green leaves are difficult to burn?



  • Green leaves contain a high percentage of water which prevents them from catching fire easily. The water content in green leaves ranges from 50 to 75 percent.

  • Water has a high heat capacity and requires a large amount of energy to be evaporated. This means that when green leaves are exposed to heat, the water in them absorbs most of the heat and prevents the leaves from reaching their ignition temperature.

  • In addition, the moisture in green leaves also dilutes the flammable gases that are produced during combustion, making it difficult for the leaves to catch fire.



Why dry leaves catch fire easily?



  • Dry leaves have a low moisture content, typically between 5 to 10 percent, which makes them more flammable than green leaves.

  • When exposed to heat, the dry leaves quickly reach their ignition temperature and start to burn.

  • The low moisture content in dry leaves also means that there is less water to absorb the heat, allowing the leaves to heat up more quickly and reach their ignition temperature faster.

  • In addition, the flammable gases produced during combustion are not diluted by moisture, which makes the combustion process more efficient and increases the intensity of the fire.
