What are digestive enymens?
Enzymes are biocatalysts which bring about changes in the reactants of the reaction to form the products. Enzymes are proteinaceous in nature. Some of the enzymes present in their inactive state require optimum conditions for their activation. Enzymes which are present in our digestive tract and bring about digestion of food are called as digestive enzymes.Enzymes of our stomach are activated by acidic environment created by HCl. Enzymes of our intestine are activated by alkaline environment in the stomach.
Function of enzymes: Digestive enzymes help in digestion of different food components like carbohydrates, proteins, fats etc. Different food components have specific enzymes that act on them. Enzymes are secreted from various parts of our digestive system like walls of stomach, liver, pancreas, salivary glands etc. Pepsin, amylase, lipase, protease, maltase etc. are some examples of enzymes secreted by our body.
