There were two battles fought between Sultan Muhammad Ghori and Prithviraj Chauhan in 1191 and 1192 respectively in the battle field of Tarain and that is why these battles were given the name, ‘the battles of Tarain’.
The detail of these two battles is as under;
1. First battle (1191) - In the first battle Prithiviraj won and made Muhammad Ghori his slave. In order to become free person, Gohri promised Prithviraj that if he frees him he will never trouble the Chauhans again. But he had lied and attacked the very next year.
2. Second battle (1192) – The next year, Ghori, attacked Prithviraj Chauhan again with full force and this time he won the battle. He captured Delhi offered the Sultanate to his slave Kutubuddin Aibak. Ghori returned back to his native place in the same year (1192) but marked the beginning of Islam Rule in India and established Delhi sultanate as the slave dynasty. In this way Delhi came under the Muslims.
