Calculating Molecular Formula of Monobasic Acid

Given:

  • Carbon(C) = 68.9%

  • Hydrogen(H) = 4.8%

  • Weight of the acid = 0.122g

  • Volume of N/10 caustic soda solution required for neutralization = 10ml

Step 1: Calculate the Number of Moles of Caustic Soda

  • 1 N solution contains 40g of NaOH per liter of solution

  • 1/10 N solution contains 4g of NaOH per liter of solution

  • 10ml of N/10 solution contains 0.04g of NaOH

  • Number of moles of NaOH = Weight of NaOH / Molar mass of NaOH

  • Molar mass of NaOH = 40g/mol

  • Number of moles of NaOH = 0.04g / 40g/mol = 0.001 mol

Step 2: Calculate the Number of Moles of Monobasic Acid

  • From the neutralization reaction: NaOH + HX → NaX + H2O

  • 1 mole of NaOH reacts with 1 mole of HX

  • Number of moles of HX = Number of moles of NaOH

  • Number of moles of HX = 0.001 mol

Step 3: Calculate the Molecular Weight of Monobasic Acid

  • Molecular weight of monobasic acid = Weight of the acid / Number of moles of acid

  • Number of moles of acid = Weight of carbon / Atomic weight of carbon + Weight of hydrogen / Atomic weight of hydrogen

  • Atomic weight of carbon = 12g/mol

  • Atomic weight of hydrogen = 1g/mol

  • Weight of carbon = 0.689 x 0.122g = 0.084 g

  • Weight of hydrogen = 0.048 x 0.122g = 0.006 g

  • Number of moles of acid = 0.084g / 12g/mol + 0.006g / 1g/mol = 0.007 mol

  • Molecular weight of monobasic acid = 0.122g / 0.007 mol = 17.43g/mol

Step 4: Calculate the Molecular Formula of Monobasic Acid

  • Molecular formula of monobasic acid = Empirical formula of acid x n

  • Empirical formula of acid = CH2O

  • Molecular weight of empirical formula = 12g/mol + 2g/mol + 16g/mol =
