Order of Slope for PV Curve

Explanation of Terms

  • Adiabatic Reversible: A process in which no heat exchange occurs with the surroundings and the system is able to be reversed without any energy loss.

  • Adiabatic Irreversible: A process in which no heat exchange occurs with the surroundings, but the system is unable to be reversed without energy loss.

  • Isentropic: A process in which the entropy of the system remains constant.

  • Isothermal: A process in which the temperature of the system remains constant.

Order of Slope

  1. Isothermal: The slope of an isothermal process is proportional to the inverse of the volume, which means that as the volume increases, the slope decreases. Therefore, the slope of an isothermal process is the smallest.

  2. Adiabatic Irreversible: The slope of an adiabatic irreversible process is steeper than that of an isothermal process because the system is unable to be reversed without energy loss. Therefore, the slope of an adiabatic irreversible process is greater than that of an isothermal process.

  3. Adiabatic Reversible: The slope of an adiabatic reversible process is steeper than that of an adiabatic irreversible process because the system is able to be reversed without any energy loss. Therefore, the slope of an adiabatic reversible process is greater than that of an adiabatic irreversible process.

  4. Isentropic: The slope of an isentropic process is the steepest because the entropy of the system remains constant, which means that the process is reversible and no energy is lost. Therefore, the slope of an isentropic process is the greatest.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the order of slope for a PV curve is as follows: isothermal, adiabatic irreversible, adiabatic reversible, and isentropic. The slopes increase in magnitude from isothermal to isentropic, with adiabatic irreversible and adiabatic reversible in between.
