Activity to Demonstrate the Effect of Temperature on the State of Ice
1. Materials Needed:
- Ice cubes
- Thermometer
- Two bowls
- Hot water
- Cold water
2. Procedure:
1. Place an ice cube in one bowl and measure its temperature using a thermometer.
2. Fill the other bowl with hot water and the ice cube bowl with cold water.
3. Observe the ice cube in the cold water and note any changes in its state.
4. Place the ice cube from the cold water into the hot water and observe any further changes.
3. Explanation:
- When the ice cube is placed in the cold water, it remains solid as the temperature is below its melting point.
- However, when the ice cube is transferred to the hot water, its temperature increases above its melting point, causing it to melt and change its state from solid to liquid.
4. Conclusion:
- This activity demonstrates how temperature affects the state of ice. At low temperatures, ice remains solid, but as the temperature increases, it melts into liquid water. This shows the importance of temperature in changing the state of matter.
