Ascending Order of Energy Band Gaps

The energy band gap is the gap between the valence band and the conduction band of a material. The materials have different energy band gaps, and they are classified into three types, namely conductors, semiconductors, and insulators. The ascending order of energy band gaps is as follows:

a) Conductor, Semiconductor, Insulator

Conductor:
- Conductors have a very small energy band gap.
- They have a large number of free electrons in the conduction band.
- The valence band is partially filled with electrons.
- Examples of conductors are copper, silver, and gold.

Semiconductor:
- Semiconductors have a moderate energy band gap.
- They have some free electrons in the conduction band.
- The valence band is partially filled with electrons.
- Examples of semiconductors are silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide.

Insulator:
- Insulators have a very large energy band gap.
- They have no free electrons in the conduction band.
- The valence band is completely filled with electrons.
- Examples of insulators are diamond, glass, and rubber.

Therefore, the ascending order of energy band gaps is conductor, semiconductor, and insulator.

In the case of insulators, the energy gap is very large while in case of conductors energy gap is very short. This energy gap refers to the energy difference between valence band and conduction band.

Whereas in semiconductors, this band gap value is in between that of conductors and insulators.
