The major symptoms described above are characteristic of rinderpest, which is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals.

Rinderpest is caused by the rinderpest virus, which belongs to the genus Morbillivirus. This virus primarily affects animals in the order Artiodactyla, including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs. It spreads through direct contact with infected animals or their secretions, as well as through contaminated feed, water, and equipment.

The symptoms of rinderpest can be categorized as follows:

Fever: Infected animals usually develop a high fever, which is one of the earliest signs of the disease. The body temperature may rise to around 106°F (41°C).

Inflammation of mucous membranes, particularly the intestines: Rinderpest causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to severe diarrhea. This results in the discharge of bloody or mucous-laden feces. The intestines may also become ulcerated.

Discharges from the eyes and nose: Infected animals may exhibit nasal and ocular discharges, which can be thick and mucopurulent. These discharges are often accompanied by conjunctivitis and nasal discharge.

Dehydration: Due to severe diarrhea and fluid loss, infected animals become dehydrated. This can further exacerbate their condition and lead to weakness and lethargy.

Skin eruptions on the back and flanks: Rinderpest can cause characteristic skin lesions on the back and flanks of infected animals. These eruptions may appear as raised bumps or blisters and are often accompanied by hair loss.

If left untreated, rinderpest can be fatal, with death occurring within four to eight days after the onset of symptoms. The disease has been responsible for significant livestock losses throughout history, causing economic and social consequences in affected regions.

It is important to note that rinderpest has been eradicated from the world through a successful global vaccination campaign. The last known case of rinderpest occurred in 2001, making it the second disease in history, after smallpox, to be eradicated.
