40%of PCL5 is not dissociated at 300C .The reaction is carried out at flask of 1L capacity. the value of Kc would be??? 1) 3.2. 2)1.6. 3) (3.2)^-1. 4)0.9 the correct ans is 4. CAN ANY ONE EXPLAIN HOW?
Verified Answer
40%of PCL5 is not dissociated at 300C .The reaction is carried out at ...
Dissociation of PCl5 can be written as :
Here given that, PCl5 <--> PCl3 + Cl2
Initially, concn.,   1 mol..0....0
At equilibrium,    1-x...x...x

Kc =[PCl3 ][Cl2] / [PCl5 ]...(1)
% age of dissociation = 60 %
Let the number of moles of PCl5 started with = 1 mol
Then there is dissocitiation of 0.6 mol of PCl5
At Equilibrium PCl5 = 0.4 mol (1- 0.6) , PCl3 = 0.6 mol and Cl2 = 0.6 mol
Putting the values in Eq (1)
Kc = 0.6 mol x 0.6 mol / 0.4 mol
    = 0.9

40%of PCL5 is not dissociated at 300C .The reaction is carried out at ...
The given problem states that 40% of PCl5 is not dissociated at 300°C. Let's assume that x is the amount of PCl5 that dissociates. Therefore, the initial amount of PCl5 in the flask is 1 - x.

To find the value of Kc, we need to set up the equilibrium expression for the dissociation of PCl5:

PCl5 ⇌ PCl3 + Cl2

The equilibrium constant expression for this reaction is:

Kc = [PCl3][Cl2] / [PCl5]

We can express the concentrations of PCl3 and Cl2 in terms of x, as they are the products of the dissociation reaction:

[PCl3] = x
[Cl2] = x

The concentration of PCl5 at equilibrium can be expressed as:

[PCl5] = 1 - x

Substituting these values into the equilibrium constant expression, we get:

Kc = (x * x) / (1 - x)

Since we know that 40% of PCl5 is not dissociated, we can write:

(1 - x) = 0.4

Solving for x, we find:

x = 0.6

Substituting this value of x into the equilibrium constant expression, we get:

Kc = (0.6 * 0.6) / (1 - 0.6)
= 0.36 / 0.4
= 0.9

Therefore, the value of Kc is 0.9. Option 4 is the correct answer.

In summary:
- Assume x is the amount of PCl5 that dissociates.
- Set up the equilibrium constant expression using the concentrations of the products and reactant.
- Substitute the given information that 40% of PCl5 is not dissociated.
- Solve for x.
- Substitute the value of x into the equilibrium constant expression to find Kc.
- The correct answer is option 4, Kc = 0.9.
