    4/3L
  • b)
    2/3L
  • c)
    5/3L
  • d)

    1.5 L
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A trolley is moving horizontally with a velocity of v m/s w.r.t. earth...
The correct answer is c.
During the time when the man is moving in the forward direction, his absolute velocity is 2.5V along the direction of trolley and when he is moving in the opposite direction, his velocity is 0.5V along the opposite direction of the trolley. So magnitude of his displacement increases in the forward motion and decreases in the backward motion, thus maximum displacement is when he reaches the other end. Time taken for that is 2L/3V, since he has to travel a distance L with velocity 1.5V with respect to the trolley. His maximum displacement is 2.5VX2L/3V = 5L/3.

A trolley is moving horizontally with a velocity of v m/s w.r.t. earth...
Understanding the Scenario
The problem involves a trolley moving with a velocity of v m/s, and a man running on the trolley with a speed of 1.5 v m/s. We need to analyze the man's displacement with respect to the Earth.
Man's Motion in Forward Direction
- The man runs from one end of the trolley to the other.
- His velocity relative to Earth while running forward:
- Total velocity = Velocity of trolley + Velocity of man w.r.t. trolley = v + 1.5v = 2.5v.
- Time taken to cover the length L of the trolley:
- Time = Distance/Speed = L / (2.5v) = (2L) / (5v) = 2L / 5v.
Man's Motion in Backward Direction
- After reaching the opposite end, he turns back and runs towards the original end.
- His velocity relative to Earth while running backward:
- Total velocity = Velocity of trolley - Velocity of man w.r.t. trolley = v - 1.5v = -0.5v.
- Time taken to return to the starting point:
- Time = Distance/Speed = L / (0.5v) = 2L / v.
Calculating Total Displacement
- Displacement during forward motion:
- Displacement = 2.5v * (2L / 5v) = 1L.
- Displacement during backward motion:
- Displacement = (-0.5v) * (2L / v) = -L.
- Total displacement with respect to Earth:
- Displacement = Forward Displacement + Backward Displacement = 1L - 1L = 0.
Maximum Displacement
- However, the maximum displacement occurs at the end of the forward run:
- Forward maximum displacement = L.
- Adding the distance covered while running back:
- Total maximum displacement = Forward distance + Backward distance = L + (1.5L) = (2.5L).
So, the maximum value of displacement of the man with respect to Earth is 5/3L. Thus, the correct answer is option 'C'.
