The Cannizzaro reaction is not given by Acetaldehyde. Aldehydes that contains alpha hydrogen atoms are not involved in Cannizzaro reaction and aldehyde like acetaldehyde contains alpha hydrogen in it. So, that's why it can't participate or involve in this reaction.

Cannizzaro Reaction and Acetaldehyde

Cannizzaro reaction is a redox reaction in which an aldehyde undergoes disproportionation reaction to form an alcohol and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a strong base. The reaction is named after the Italian chemist Stanislao Cannizzaro who discovered it in 1853.

The general equation for the Cannizzaro reaction is:

RCHO + OH- → RCOO- + RCH2OH

RCHO + RCHO → RCOOR + RCH2OH

Here, R represents an alkyl or aryl group.

Explanation of the answer:

Acetaldehyde is not capable of undergoing the Cannizzaro reaction because it lacks a α-hydrogen atom. The reaction needs a hydrogen atom at the α-carbon to form a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. Acetaldehyde has only one carbon atom, so it does not have an α-hydrogen atom. Hence, this reaction is not given by acetaldehyde.

Formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and trimethylacetaldehyde all have α-hydrogen atoms and can undergo the Cannizzaro reaction.

Conclusion:

Thus, the correct answer to the given question is option 'B' which says that acetaldehyde does not undergo the Cannizzaro reaction because it lacks α-hydrogen atom.
