Distinguish between monsoon and western cyclonic disturbance?
Verified Answer
Distinguish between monsoon and western cyclonic disturbance?
Monsoon  is traditionally defined as a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation, but is now used to describe seasonal changes in atmospheric circulation and precipitation associated with the asymmetric heating of land and sea. Usually, the term monsoon is used to refer to the rainy phase of a seasonally changing pattern, although technically there is also a dry phase.

A Western Disturbance is an extratropical storm originating in the Mediterranean region that brings sudden winter rain to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent. It is a non-monsoonal precipitation pattern driven by the westerlies.

Distinguish between monsoon and western cyclonic disturbance?
The south west monsoon is a seasonal rainfall that is usually very predictable and occurs due to the heating of the waters around the tropics in the Indian Ocean which is then pushed upwards toward the western shore of India, bringing very heave rainfall to the west coast and lighter showers in the rest of India and toward the Himalayas.
The Western disturbances usually start from the Atlantic ocean or the Mediterranean and usually fall as rain in the north west of India. It is an extratropical phenomenon unlike the monsoon which is a tropical phenomenon. The moisture in this case is usually carried in the clouds toward the upper atmosphere unlike the monsoons which are a lower atmosphere phenomenon and takes higher mountains to cause them to shed moisture.

A WD is associated with rainfall, snowfall and fog in northern India. Upon its arrival in Pakistan and northern India, clouds along with rain and snow also arrive. The moisture which WDs carry with them comes from the Mediterranean Sea and/or from the Atlantic Ocean.
