Ionic character of a compound can be determined by the difference in electronegativity between the two elements that form the compound. The greater the difference in electronegativity, the greater the ionic character of the compound.

The electronegativity values of Li, Rb, Be, and Mg are 1.0, 0.8, 1.5, and 1.2 respectively.

Greatest and least ionic character

LiCl, RbCl, BeCl2, and MgCl2 are all binary compounds consisting of a metal and a non-metal.

Li and Cl have a difference in electronegativity of 3.0 - 1.0 = 2.0
Rb and Cl have a difference in electronegativity of 3.0 - 0.8 = 2.2
Be and Cl have a difference in electronegativity of 3.0 - 1.5 = 1.5
Mg and Cl have a difference in electronegativity of 3.0 - 1.2 = 1.8

Therefore, RbCl has the greatest ionic character since it has the greatest difference in electronegativity, while BeCl2 has the least ionic character since it has the smallest difference in electronegativity.
