Firstly, write the decimal numbers in fractional form. For e.g. 0.5 is 5/10.
Multiply the dividend with the reciprocal of divisor. The answer obtained is the required answer.
While dividing a number by 10, 100 or 1000, the digits of the number and the quotient are same but the decimal point in the quotient shifts to the left by as many places as there are zeros over one.

Understanding Division of Decimal Numbers
Dividing decimal numbers can seem challenging, but with a clear approach, it becomes manageable. Let’s break down the process.
Steps to Divide Decimal Numbers:
1. Align the Numbers:
- Write the divisor (the number you are dividing by) and the dividend (the number being divided).
- If the divisor is a decimal, adjust it to be a whole number by shifting the decimal point to the right. Do the same for the dividend.
2. Perform the Division:
- Divide as you would with whole numbers.
- If the dividend has more decimal places than the divisor, place the decimal point in the quotient (the answer) directly above the decimal point in the dividend.
3. Handling Remainders:
- If there are remaining digits in the dividend after dividing, continue the division by adding zeros and bringing them down as needed.
4. Finalizing the Answer:
- Once you’ve completed the division, write the final answer, ensuring the decimal point is correctly placed.
Example of Dividing Decimals:
- Let’s say we want to divide 4.56 by 1.2.
- Adjust: Move the decimal in 1.2 to make it 12 (shift the decimal in 4.56 one place to the right to make it 45.6).
- Divide: Now, calculate 45.6 ÷ 12.
- Result: The answer will be 3.8.
Practice Tips:
- Use Estimation: Before performing the division, estimate the answer to check your work.
- Check Your Work: Multiply the quotient by the divisor to see if you get back to the original dividend.
By following these steps and practicing, dividing decimal numbers will become easier and more intuitive.
