Answer:

When hydrogen sulphide gas is passed through an acidified solution containing a mixture of the sulphates of cadmium, nickel and zinc, the following reactions take place:

CdSO4 + H2S → CdS↓ + H2SO4
NiSO4 + H2S → NiS↓ + H2SO4
ZnSO4 + H2S → ZnS↓ + H2SO4

The above reactions show that all the sulphates are converted to their respective sulphides. However, only CdS will be precipitated as it is insoluble in water, whereas NiS and ZnS are soluble in excess of hydrogen sulphide. Hence, the correct option is D, i.e., CdS.

Explanation:

The given question is based on the precipitation reactions of sulphides with metal ions. When hydrogen sulphide gas is passed through an acidified solution containing a mixture of the sulphates of cadmium, nickel and zinc, the gas reacts with the metal ions to form their respective sulphides. The reactions are shown above.

CdS is insoluble in water and forms a yellow precipitate. NiS and ZnS are soluble in excess of hydrogen sulphide and hence do not form precipitates. NiS is soluble in dilute mineral acids and forms green solutions, whereas ZnS is insoluble in dilute mineral acids and forms white precipitates.

Therefore, only CdS will be precipitated from the given mixture, and the other two sulphides will remain in solution. The precipitate obtained can be filtered, washed and dried to obtain pure CdS.
