1. Initiation: Chlorine molecule absorbs light energy and breaks down into two chlorine free radicals (each with one unpaired electron).

2. Propagation: The chlorine free radical reacts with isobutane to form an isobutyl radical and a hydrogen chloride molecule. The isobutyl radical then reacts with another chlorine molecule to form tert-butyl chloride and a chlorine free radical.

(CH3)3C• + Cl2 → (CH3)3CCl + Cl•

3. Termination: The reaction terminates when two free radicals combine to form a stable product.
