Lies in the fact that Gandhi considered his own ideologies superior to the freedom that the country was craving for. For him imposing philosophies of non-violence on the countrymen had a clear priority over fighting for freedom.

Gandhi's stands against Bhagat Singh or for that matter Subhash Chandra Bose and other freedom fighters clearly indicate that he would have probably even disapproved freedom if it was gained by any means other than non-violence. This is a sad and bitter truth vindicated by the fact that it was the same Gandhi who was once opposed to partitioning the country but was the first person to approve it when the British decided to leave India and it was the same Gandhi who approved sending Indian troops into the World War to fight for the British.

As such saying that that Gandhi did his best to save Bhagat Singh would be a blatant lie in the face of the nation. He would have never agree to save Bhagat Singh for whatever reasons.

On a footnote, if we were to fight for independence as one, we would have been free a lot earlier. Also the main reason we ultimately won our freedom is not because of the non-violence movement, the British would have happily suppressed the satyagrahis and plundered our country for another century or more. The state of Britain after the World War and the mutiny in the Royal Indian Navy in 1946 had given the British a clear signal that they would not be able to repress the nation any further. Also since the British were facing a villain themselves in the form of Nazis, it would have been very difficult for them to justify their continued rule over India.
