Neutralization of Sulphuryl Chloride with Hydroxide ions:

Sulphuryl Chloride (SO2Cl2) reacts with water (H2O) to form Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4) and Hydrogen Chloride (HCl). The balanced chemical equation is:

SO2Cl2 + 2H2O → H2SO4 + 2HCl

To neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride, we need to add a certain amount of Hydroxide ions (OH-) to the solution. The amount of Hydroxide ions required for neutralization depends on the strength of the base.

Options for Neutralizing Sulphuryl Chloride:

a) 3 moles of NaOH:

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) is a strong base and can neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride. However, we need 3 moles of NaOH to neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride completely. This is because NaOH is a monovalent base and can neutralize only one acid molecule at a time.

b) 2 moles of Ca(OH)2:

Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) is a strong base and can neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride. We need 2 moles of Ca(OH)2 to neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride completely. This is because Ca(OH)2 is a divalent base and can neutralize two acid molecules at a time.

c) Both:

Since option 'B' is correct, option 'C' is also correct as it includes option 'B'.

d) None of these:

This option is incorrect as Sulphuryl Chloride can be neutralized by strong bases like NaOH and Ca(OH)2.

Conclusion:

To neutralize 1 mole of Sulphuryl Chloride completely, we need 2 moles of Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). This is because Ca(OH)2 is a strong divalent base and can neutralize two acid molecules at a time. Hence, option 'B' is the correct answer.
