58.5 g of NaCl and 180 g of Glucose were separately dissolved in 1000 mL of water. Identify the correct statement regarding elevation of boiling point of resulting solutions:
  • a)
NaCl solution will show higher elevation of boiling point
  • b)
Glucose solution will show higher elevation of boiling point
  • c)
Both solution will show equal elevation of boiling point
  • d)
    No elevation will be observed
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
58.5 g of NaCl and 180 g of Glucose were separately dissolved in 1000 ...
Solution
The elevation of boiling point (b.p.)
ΔTb=iKbm
ΔTb∝iXm
The soultion having higher iXm will have higher ΔTb
For NaCl solution i=2 as one molecule of NaCl dissociates to produce two ions.
The molality of NaCl m= 58.5 g  58.5 g/mol X1000 mL X1 g/mL X 1000 g/kg= 1 m
For NaCl solution iXm=2X1=2
For glucose solution i=1 as molecule of glucose does not dissociates.
The molality of glucose m= 180 g  180 g/mol X 1000 mL X 1 g/mL X 1000 g/kg= 1 m
For glucose solution iXm=1X1=1
Thus, NaCl solution will have higher elevation of boiling point  (ΔTb) than glucose solution.
