Exhaled air contains more carbon dioxide and less oxygen

Introduction:
When we breathe in, we inhale air that contains a mixture of gases, including oxygen and carbon dioxide. These gases play a vital role in the process of respiration. The composition of inhaled and exhaled air differs due to the exchange of these gases that occurs in our lungs.

Explanation:

Inhaled Air:
When we breathe in, we inhale air which consists of approximately 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and traces of other gases. The inhaled air enters our respiratory system through the nose or mouth and passes through the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchial tubes before reaching the lungs.

Exhaled Air:
When we breathe out, or exhale, the air that leaves our body is different from the air we inhale. Exhaled air contains approximately 16% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide, and the remaining 80% is nitrogen and traces of other gases. The decrease in oxygen content and increase in carbon dioxide content in exhaled air is due to the gas exchange that takes place in the alveoli of the lungs.

Gas Exchange:
The exchange of gases occurs in the alveoli, which are small air sacs present in the lungs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream, where it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells for transportation to the body's cells. At the same time, carbon dioxide, which is a waste product produced by the cells, diffuses from the bloodstream into the alveoli to be exhaled.

Conclusion:
In summary, exhaled air contains more carbon dioxide and less oxygen compared to inhaled air. This is because the oxygen inhaled is used by the body's cells for various metabolic processes, while carbon dioxide, a waste product generated by the cells, is expelled from the body through exhalation.
