In a four-branch parallel circuit, there are 10 mA of current in each branch. If one of the branches is open, the current in each of the other three branches is:
  • a)
    13.3 mA
  • b)
    10 mA
  • c)
    0 A
  • d)
    30 mA
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

In a four-branch parallel circuit, there are 10 mA of current in each ...
All the four branches are connected in parallel, so the voltage across every branch is same. If one of the branch is open, it doesn’t affect the other branches current. Because the voltage and impedance across remaining branches will remain same.

In a four-branch parallel circuit, there are 10 mA of current in each ...
Solution:
When all branches are connected in parallel, the voltage across each branch is the same.

Current in each branch = 10 mA

Total current in the circuit = 4 x 10 mA = 40 mA

If one of the branches is open, the total current in the circuit will decrease.

Let's assume that the open branch is branch 1.

Total current in the circuit = current in branch 2 + current in branch 3 + current in branch 4

40 mA = I2 + I3 + I4

Since all branches are identical, current in each of the three branches will be the same.

So, I2 = I3 = I4 = I

Therefore, 40 mA = 3I

I = 40 mA / 3

I ≈ 13.3 mA

Hence, the current in each of the other three branches is 10 mA (same as before the branch was open).

Therefore, the correct answer is option B (10 mA).
