Radial Symmetry vs Bilateral Symmetry

Radial symmetry

  • Radial symmetry is a type of symmetry where an organism can be divided into identical halves by any plane passing through the center.

  • It is commonly found in animals such as jellyfish, sea urchins, and starfish.

  • In these organisms, the body parts are arranged around a central axis, like the spokes on a wheel.

  • There is no left or right side, and the organism can move in any direction.

  • It is advantageous for animals that need to capture prey or avoid predators from any direction.

Bilateral symmetry

  • Bilateral symmetry is a type of symmetry where an organism can be divided into two identical halves by only one plane passing through the center.

  • It is commonly found in animals such as humans, dogs, and butterflies.

  • In these organisms, the body is divided into two mirror-image halves, with a distinct left and right side.

  • The head and tail ends of the organism are also distinct.

  • It is advantageous for animals that have a defined front and back end and need to move in a specific direction.

Key differences

  • The main difference between radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry is the number of planes that can divide the organism into identical halves.

  • In radial symmetry, the organism can be divided into identical halves by any plane passing through the center, while in bilateral symmetry, only one plane can divide the organism into identical halves.

  • Radial symmetry is commonly found in animals that need to capture prey or avoid predators from any direction, while bilateral symmetry is advantageous for animals that have a defined front and back end and need to move in a specific direction.

In summary, radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry are two different types of symmetry found in animals. Radial symmetry allows an organism to be divided into identical halves by any plane passing through the center, while bilateral symmetry allows an organism to be divided into identical halves by only one plane passing through the center. The type of symmetry an organism has is determined by its lifestyle and environmental factors.

What is the difference between radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry ...
Radial symmetry means when one or more than one line of symmetry is pass verticaly from upward direction and horizontaly from any degree then it divides it into 2 equal parts...... there are infinite of symmetry lines.....
where as bilateral symmetry means when only one line of symmetry get passes from an object and it divides it into 2 equal parts...... there is only one line of symmetry......
