The star is Proxima Centuri and it's 4.22 light years from us. It's a low mass red dwarf that is part of a binary system. Traveling at the fastest speed we've attained to date - approx 52k miles per hour by the Pluto mission craft - it would take over 50k years to get there. That said we may still see a mission to this star happening within the next 10 years that will use a new approach. Instead of sending a standard rocket propelled spacecraft a plan to send a swarm of tiny microprocessor sized probes - ship on a chip - that would utilize a laser sails to reach speeds around 20% of the speed of light has been endorsed by many scientists including Steven Hawking. At that speed we would arrive at the star in about 20 years so we could have close up images of another star by the late 2030’s. Very doable.
