Most Upvoted Answer
The kinetics of the reaction 2N2O5 → 4NO2 + O2 in liquid bromine...
Explanation:

Given:

Reaction: 2N2O5 4NO2 O2

Three different initial concentrations of N2O5: 0.11, 0.07 and 0.05 mol L1

Half-life of the reaction = 4.5 hours for all concentrations

To find: Order of the reaction

Definition:

The order of a chemical reaction is the sum of the powers of the concentration terms in the rate equation.

Derivation:

From the given information, we know that the half-life of the reaction is independent of the initial concentration of N2O5. Therefore, the reaction follows first-order kinetics.

For a first-order reaction,

t1/2 = 0.693/k

where t1/2 is the half-life of the reaction and k is the rate constant.

As t1/2 is constant for all three concentrations, the rate constant k must also be constant. Therefore, the reaction is first-order and the order of the reaction is 1.

Answer:

The order of the reaction is 1 (option B).

The kinetics of the reaction 2N2O5 → 4NO2 + O2 in liquid bromine...
Equation for half life of 1st order reaction is (0.693÷k) .Here it is clear that half life is independent of initial concentration .so it is 1st order as the change in concentration does not affect half life.
