1 M of 10ml H2SO4= 1M of 20ml NH3 ,1000 ml of 1M ammonia contain 14g nitrogen

20 ml of 1 M ammonia contain

14×20/1000g of nitrogen

percentage of nitrogen=

14×20×100/1000×0.5

= 56.0%

During estimation of nitrogen present in an organic compound by Kjelda...
Solution:

Given, weight of organic compound (w) = 0.5 g
Volume of 1 M H2SO4 required to neutralize ammonia evolved from the organic compound = 10 mL

Step 1: Calculation of moles of H2SO4 neutralized by ammonia

Moles of H2SO4 neutralized by ammonia = 10 mL x 1 mol/L = 0.01 mol

Step 2: Calculation of moles of NH3 evolved from the organic compound

Moles of NH3 evolved from the organic compound = Moles of H2SO4 neutralized by ammonia
= 0.01 mol

Step 3: Calculation of moles of nitrogen present in the organic compound

Moles of nitrogen present in the organic compound = Moles of NH3 evolved from the organic compound x 1/2
= 0.005 mol

Step 4: Calculation of percentage of nitrogen present in the organic compound

Percentage of nitrogen present in the organic compound = (Moles of nitrogen present in the organic compound / Weight of organic compound) x 100%
= (0.005 mol / 0.5 g) x 100%
= 1.0 g/g x 100%
= 56%

Therefore, the percentage of nitrogen present in the organic compound is 56%.
