A Lindlar catalyst is a heterogeneous catalyst that consists of palladium deposited on calcium carbonate or barium sulphate which is then poisoned with various forms of lead or sulphur. It is used for the hydrogenation of alkynes to cis alkenes (i.e. without further reduction into alkanes) When the triple bond is (2-butyne) hydrogenated over the Lindlar’s catalyst i.e.Pd/CaCO3
 it gives predominantly cis alkene(2-butene).

Direction (Q, Nos. 13 - 16) This section is based on Statement I and S...
Explanation of Statements
Statement I: 2-butyne on reduction with Pd/CaCO3 gives cis-2-butene.
- This statement is true.
- When 2-butyne undergoes hydrogenation in the presence of palladium on calcium carbonate (Pd/CaCO3), it selectively forms cis-2-butene rather than trans-2-butene.
- The use of a poisoned catalyst like Pd/CaCO3 facilitates this specific product formation.
Statement II: Hydrogenation proceeds through an adsorption mechanism.
- This statement is also true.
- Hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes generally occurs via an adsorption process where the reactants are adsorbed onto the surface of the catalyst.
- This leads to a lower energy pathway for the reaction and allows for the specific formation of cis isomers when the substrate is a symmetrical alkyne like 2-butyne.
Relationship Between the Statements
- Both statements are correct.
- Statement II provides a valid explanation for Statement I because the adsorption mechanism plays a crucial role in determining the stereochemistry of the product.
Conclusion
- Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A': Both Statement I and Statement II are correct and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I.
This explanation consolidates the understanding of the reduction of 2-butyne and the chemistry involved in its hydrogenation.
