Flushing takes human waste down pipes to a sewer. Wastewater from households containing human faeces and waste material is called sewage. Sewer pipes from residential areas and other public toilets are connected through sewer pipes in the underground sewerage system. Sewer pipes take the sewage to sewage treatment plants.At treatment plants, sewage is treated to remove all harmful chemicals and biological agents. Various methods such as filtration, chemical digestion as well as microbial degradation are used to treat the sewage. The treated sewage or water is then released into nearby water bodies such as rivers, lakes or seas etc.In some countries, like India, there aren’t enough sewage treatment plants when compared to the sewage generated. In some places, people use septic tanks and pits to take care of sewage. Toilets are connected to septic tanks where all the waste goes. It is stored in the tanks for a while and then artificially removed when the tank reaches capacity.Some countries are using advanced technology to solve the problem of increasing human waste. In some parts of Australia, drinking water is made from treated sewage. Singapore, in fact, makes recycled drinking water from sewage that is purer than the level suggested by WHO.
