Would you agree with the view that the message of universal rights was beset with contradiction? Explain
Most Upvoted Answer
Would you agree with the view that the message of universal rights was...
Introduction:
The concept of universal rights has been a cornerstone of modern political theory and practice. However, it is not without its contradictions. This essay will explore these contradictions and argue that the message of universal rights is indeed beset with contradiction.

Contradiction 1: Cultural Relativism
One of the main contradictions of the message of universal rights is cultural relativism. This is the idea that different cultures have different values and norms, and that one cannot impose one's own values on others. This contradicts the idea of universal rights, which suggests that certain rights are inherent to all humans, regardless of their cultural background.

Contradiction 2: Western Bias
Another contradiction is the Western bias that is inherent in the concept of universal rights. Many of the rights that are considered universal, such as freedom of speech and assembly, are based on Western values and traditions. This has led to criticism that the concept of universal rights is really just a way for Western countries to impose their values on others.

Contradiction 3: Inconsistent Implementation
A third contradiction is the inconsistent implementation of universal rights. While many countries have signed onto treaties and declarations that recognize universal rights, these rights are often violated in practice. Additionally, different countries have different interpretations of what constitutes a universal right, leading to inconsistency in implementation.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the message of universal rights is beset with contradiction. Cultural relativism, Western bias, and inconsistent implementation all challenge the idea that certain rights are inherent to all humans. While the concept of universal rights is important, it is also important to recognize and address these contradictions in order to ensure that the message of universal rights is truly universal.

Would you agree with the view that the message of universal rights was...
Yes, the message of universal rights was beset with
contradictions. Though it laid emphasis on the three fundamental principles of liberty, equality and fraternity, it is
a great contribution of France to the world. But philosophers like Marat
and journalists such as Camike Desmoulins have cautioned not to take the
different rights to the extreme since they give foul smell or taste sour.

(i) The Women challenged the Declaration of Rights
for discrimination on the basis of gender.

(ii) Jean Paul Marat criticized the right to
represent the people given in the Constitution as it was available to only rich; poor and oppressed were deprived of this
right.

(iii) Desmoulins criticized the Reign of Terror for
keeping the liberty under discipline before it attains maturity.

(iv) My right of liberty does not mean that I should finish off all my enemies.
