Which of the following statement is true for a thermodynamical system ...
The correct statement is option 'D': U = -W in an adiabatic process. Let's understand why this is true.

Adiabatic Process:
An adiabatic process is a thermodynamic process in which there is no transfer of heat energy between the system and its surroundings. In other words, there is no heat exchange between the system and its surroundings.

Internal Energy (U):
Internal energy is the total energy possessed by a system. It includes the kinetic energy and potential energy of the particles within the system.

Work done (W):
Work done is the energy transferred to or from a system due to the application of a force over a distance. In thermodynamics, work done can be in the form of expansion (work done by the system) or compression (work done on the system).

Explanation:
In an adiabatic process, there is no heat transfer. Therefore, the change in internal energy (U) of the system is solely due to the work done (W) on or by the system.

When work is done on the system (compression), the internal energy of the system increases. This means that the change in internal energy (U) is positive.

When work is done by the system (expansion), the internal energy of the system decreases. This means that the change in internal energy (U) is negative.

In an adiabatic process, the work done on or by the system can be calculated using the equation:

W = PΔV

where P is the pressure and ΔV is the change in volume.

Since the work done is either positive or negative depending on whether it is done on or by the system, the change in internal energy (U) is opposite in sign to the work done.

Therefore, the correct statement is U = -W in an adiabatic process.
