The Electron Transport Chain

The electron transport chain is the final stage in the complete oxidation of glucose, and it is during this stage that the greatest number of ATP molecules are formed from ADP. Here's why:

- The electron transport chain is a series of proteins and cofactors located in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- As electrons are passed along the chain, energy is released and used to pump protons (H+) out of the mitochondrial matrix and into the intermembrane space.
- This creates an electrochemical gradient, with a higher concentration of protons in the intermembrane space than in the matrix.
- The protons can then flow back into the matrix through ATP synthase, a protein complex that uses the energy of the proton gradient to produce ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi).
- This process, called oxidative phosphorylation, generates the majority of the ATP produced during cellular respiration.

In contrast, glycolysis only generates a net of 2 ATP molecules per glucose molecule, while the Krebs cycle produces 2 ATP molecules per glucose molecule (since the cycle completes twice per glucose molecule). The conversion of pyruvic acid to Acetyl Co A also generates 1 ATP molecule per pyruvate molecule, but this occurs outside the mitochondria and is not part of the electron transport chain.

Therefore, the electron transport chain is where the greatest number of ATP molecules are formed from ADP during the complete oxidation of glucose.

During which stage in the complete oxidation of glucose is the greates...
The last step of aerobic respiration is the oxidation of reduced coenzymes. i.e., NADH2 and FADH2 by molecular oxygen through FAD, uhiquinone, cyt -b, cyt-c, cyt-c1, cyt -a and cyt.-a3. By oxidation of 1 molecule of NADH2, 3 ATP molecules are produced and by oxidation of 1 molecule of FADH2 2ATP molecules are Produced in glycolysis 2 ATP molecules are produced from ADP.

Further 2NADH2 produced, give 2 x 3 =6 ATP, on oxidative phosphorylation. Similarly in Krebs' cycle 2 ATP molecules are produced. So the greatest number of ATP molecules are produced in the electron transport chain.
