Explanation:

Humidity is the amount of moisture present in the air. The air around us contains water vapour which is invisible to the naked eye. The amount of water vapour present in the air varies from place to place, season to season, and time to time. The warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air. The moisture in the air can be felt as dampness or stickiness on the skin in humid conditions.

Importance of humidity:

Humidity is an important factor in our daily lives. It affects our health, comfort, and environment. Some of the important roles of humidity are:

  • It affects our body temperature. High humidity makes us feel hot and sticky while low humidity makes us feel cold.

  • It affects our respiratory system. High humidity makes it difficult to breathe while low humidity can cause dryness in the nose and throat.

  • It affects our skin and hair. High humidity can cause sweating and make our skin and hair feel greasy while low humidity can cause dryness and flakiness.

  • It affects our environment. High humidity can cause mould and mildew growth while low humidity can cause static electricity and damage to wooden furniture and musical instruments.

Measuring humidity:

Humidity can be measured using a device called a hygrometer. There are two types of hygrometers: mechanical and electronic. Mechanical hygrometers use a hair or coil that expands and contracts with changes in humidity while electronic hygrometers use sensors to measure the amount of water vapour in the air.

Conclusion:

Humidity is an important factor in our daily lives that affects our health, comfort, and environment. It can be measured using a hygrometer and varies from place to place, season to season, and time to time.
