Aim:- To find the determine the density of solid by spring balance.

Apparatus:- A spring balance, a solid object like stone, thread, water and graduated cylinder.

Procedure:-
Step 1:- Take a spring balance.

Step 2:- Tie a stone to the thread and suspend from the hook at the lower end of the spring balance. Reading of spring balance is noted down.It gives us mass of the stone.

Step 3:- Some water is poured in the cylinder and initial reading is measured. Let it be V1.

Step 4:-  Now, the stone is fully immersed in water without touching the sides walls of container. The level of water increases. Let the reading be V2.

Observation:-
mass of the stone = m=--gms
Volume of the stone=V2-V1 = V ml
Now density of the stone can be found by :
Density=mass/volume

Determining the Density of a Solid using a Spring Balance Measuring Cylinder

1. Introduction:
Determining the density of a solid is an important scientific procedure that involves measuring the mass and volume of the object. In this case, we will use a spring balance measuring cylinder to determine the density of a solid that is denser than water. The density of a substance is defined as its mass per unit volume.

2. Materials Required:
To carry out this procedure, the following materials are required:
- Solid object (denser than water)
- Spring balance
- Measuring cylinder
- Water
- Stopwatch or timer
- Calculator

3. Procedure:
Follow these steps to determine the density of the solid:

Step 1: Measure the mass of the solid
- Start by measuring the mass of the solid using a spring balance.
- Attach the solid object to the spring balance and suspend it in the air.
- Record the mass of the solid in grams. Let's denote this as "m1".

Step 2: Measure the volume of water displaced
- Fill a measuring cylinder with water up to a certain level.
- Note the initial volume of water in the measuring cylinder. Let's denote this as "V1".
- Gently lower the solid object into the measuring cylinder, ensuring it is fully submerged.
- The water level will rise due to the displacement caused by the solid object.
- Note the final volume of water in the measuring cylinder. Let's denote this as "V2".

Step 3: Calculate the volume of the solid
- Subtract the initial volume (V1) from the final volume (V2) to determine the volume of water displaced by the solid object. Let's denote this as "V".
- Convert the volume of water displaced from milliliters to cubic centimeters (1 mL = 1 cm^3).

Step 4: Calculate the density of the solid
- Divide the mass of the solid (m1) by the volume of the solid (V) to obtain the density of the solid.
- The density can be calculated using the formula: Density = mass/volume.

4. Conclusion:
By following the above procedure and calculations, you can determine the density of a solid that is denser than water using a spring balance measuring cylinder. It is important to record accurate measurements to obtain precise results. The density of the solid will be expressed in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm^3).
