Explicit information | The Complete SAT Course - Class 10 PDF Download

What's on the test?

On your official SAT, you're likely to see 3-4 questions that ask you to provide information that is mentioned explicitly (clearly and directly) in the passage. In other words: "what does the passage say?"
Explicit information questions will ask you about facts. They often begin in the following ways:

  • According to the passage. . .
  • The passage states that. . .
  • The author indicates that. . .

The best answer will paraphrase a statement from the passage.

Common Errors

Incorrect choices on explicit information questions are commonly caused by the following errors:

  • Misplaced information: Wrong choices will often refer to information that was in the passage, but is unrelated to the question being asked. Since explicit information questions can usually be answered by just one part of the passage (a sentence or paragraph), choices that draw in information from other parts of the passage are often incorrect.
  • Unsupported claims: Wrong choices might make statements that sound good or make sense, but they aren't supported by the passage. The answers to explicit information questions will always be supported by information that is directly contained in the passage—usually in just one or two lines.

Tips and Strategies

Top tip: Eliminate new information
  • If a choice includes information that isn't contained in the passage, we can eliminate it with confidence.
  • Many wrong choices might "make sense"—they might make you think "Hey, that's interesting! That sounds good!" But watch out—those choices are often wrong!!! The correct answer to an explicit information question is always the one contains info that is directly stated in the passage.

Top tip: Search for keywords

  • If we can't remember exactly what the passage said, that's OK. We might still remember where in the passage a certain topic was discussed. Did the question mention "smartphones"? Then go find the part of the passage that discussed "smartphones"!
  • If we go back through the passage and look for keywords from the question, we'll be able to find the answer.

Note: The answer will be right there in the text! Your job is to select the choice that expresses the same idea using different words.
