How to Prepare Chemistry for JEE? Notes | Study JEE Main & Advanced Mock Test Series - JEE

  • Chemistry is an equally vital subject for JEE Mains Preparation. Chemistry occupies one-third of the JEE Main question paper, and is equally important as the other two subjects, ie. Physics and Mathematics.
  • In order to succeed in the JEE Main, students should make their own strategies. Out of the three sections in the JEE Main, Chemistry is a major one and considered to be a student-friendly subject. But, that does not mean that it does not require much attention.
  • Students often tend to ignore chemistry as they find it an easier one, but that's where the mistake lies. Easy subject, when given equal importance will lead to better scores and results.
  • The preparation tips for Chemistry for JEE Main 2021 will help you to know about important books and topics you should through while preparing for the entrance exam.

JEE Main Chemistry preparation requires a lot of practice of Conversions, Numerical and Revision of the theory. It is a comparatively more scoring subject than physics and maths.

Follow these Preparation tips that will guide you well and help achieve desired results:

1. Start with the Basics

  • The first step of preparation after you have analysed your syllabus and made a schedule, is to focus on Chemistry NCERT Textbooks. This is crucial to build your basics and clear the concepts in an easy way.
  • Also, start your preparation as early as possible. As an early starter, you will have time to tweak your preparation if you run off track. For example, if you are lagging in a particular section or topic, you will have enough time to study and understand it well. This way you can utilize your time reading and practising the problems hard.

2. Time Management

  • At the time of revision, it is necessary to divide your revision time efficiently among the three branches of Chemistry – Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry. Whereas Physical Chemistry doesn’t require much of memorization and contains more numerical type questions, and you get comfortable with Organic Chemistry with practice, you may need to spend most of your revision time on Inorganic Chemistry to learn all the reactions efficiently.

3. Keep a check on Speed and Accuracy

  • Speed and accuracy are the major determinants of your JEE Main rank. Accuracy is important as you would not like to get negative marks for doing silly mistakes. If you are fast at solving questions, you’ll be able to solve more questions in lesser time, which means you’ll secure more marks.
  • The time taken to complete the JEE Main Chemistry paper is generally lesser as compared to the time taken to complete the Physics and Mathematics paper. This is because there are a lesser number of calculative questions in Chemistry as compared to Physics and Mathematics.
  • When practising with tests and previous year papers, check whether you are able to solve the problems and answer all the questions within a limited time.
  • Improving the strike rate of your answers is also vital to score well in chemistry. You can cut down on mistakes by clearing your concepts and also by practising problem exercises.

4. Prepare according to the weightage of topics

  • Stereochemistry and functional analysis are among the most important topics in organic chemistry. In inorganic chemistry chemical bonding is most important than p block, Coordination Compounds, s-block, hydrogen at last d and f block elements are important. But we can’t say that you should only read this topic for the qualifying chemistry section in JEE Mains. you need to distribute your time strategically among all the topics. So go through the syllabus very thoroughly. If you would go with this you can score well in your JEE Main.
  • In physical chemistry, many questions are formed on titration and stoichiometry. Other important topics include electrochemistry, mole concept, and chemical equilibrium.

5. Solve Previous Year Question Papers

  • The best way to tests yourself before the final exam is to attempt previous year papers.  It will teach you time management, help find out areas where silly mistakes are happening, and get familiar with the exam pattern. Also, if you solve, say questions papers of the last ten years or so, there is a good chance that some questions may be repeated. If that happens, you can happily earn some free scores!
  • Also, doing so will help you revise the concepts that were asked in JEE Main earlier and you’ll also get a flavour of the type of questions asked in the JEE Main. Try to analyze your weak points and work towards improving them.

6. Always Revise

  • When you are two to three months away from the JEE Main exam, you should try mimicking the examination conditions at the time of revision so that you get habitual to it. Do the revision in three hour-long sessions. Always make time for revision as revising all the topics before the exam will help you retain them for a long time.

Section-wise Preparation Guide for JEE Mains Chemistry

1. JEE Main Physical Chemistry Preparation Guide

  • We know that Physical chemistry deals with observing and understanding the physical and chemical properties of matter and our surroundings. It covers several basic, much-used concepts and covers at least 30-40% of the JEE exam paper and so, forms a big part.
  • To have a good grasp of all the concepts of Physical Chemistry, make detailed notes about each topic. Topics like Mole Concept, Thermodynamics, Energy, Chemical Equilibrium, Chemical Bonding and Atomic structure are really important and require thorough understanding and learning of concepts and formulae. Also, never skip practising questions. JEE chemistry numerical can only be solved by regular practice.

2. JEE Main Organic Chemistry Preparation Guide

  • Organic chemistry comes across as a difficult part at first, since its not an easy task to remember the reactions, compounds, mechanisms and structures. But it’s essential to master this portion of JEE chemistry as it is highly scoring and if studied well, chances of negative marking are considerably less as the questions are generally not so twisted compared to other sections.
  • Also, if revision is done properly, you can attempt this section in the least amount of time.

3. JEE Main Inorganic Chemistry Preparation Guide

  • This is a favourite section to many students because it is easy and scoring section as well.
  • This is because it involves almost no problem solving or calculations or formulae.
  • The only important suggestion in inorganic chemistry is, don't spend more time on single question if you don't know an answer.
  • Questions from inorganic chemistry section are mainly conceptual. The major topics you need to focus on are – Chemical bonding,  Analytical chemistry, Periodic table, metallurgy, Chemical reactions, coordination chemistry.
