  i) Light is a form of energy which helps us to see objects.
ii) When light falls on objects, it reflects the light and when the
reflected light reaches our eyes then we see the objects.
iii) Light travels in straight line.
iv) The common phenomena of light are formation of shadows,
formation of images by mirrors and lenses, bending of light by a
medium, twinkling of stars, formation of rainbow etc.

When light falls on a highly polished surface like a mirror most of
the light is sent back into the same medium. This process is called
reflection of light.

a) Laws of reflection of light :-
  i) The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
ii) The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal to the mirror at
the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

FAQs on Light : Reflection & Refraction - PPT, Class 10 Science

1. What is the difference between reflection and refraction of light?
Ans. Reflection is the phenomenon in which a ray of light bounces back from a surface after striking it. Refraction is the bending of light when it passes through a medium of different density. In reflection, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, while in refraction, the angle of incidence and angle of refraction are different.
2. What is the law of reflection?
Ans. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. It means that the angle between the incident ray and the normal to the surface at the point of incidence is equal to the angle between the reflected ray and the normal.
3. What is the critical angle of light?
Ans. The critical angle of light is the angle of incidence in a denser medium, at which the angle of refraction in the rarer medium becomes 90 degrees. At this angle, the refracted light travels along the interface between the two media, and total internal reflection occurs.
4. What is the difference between convex and concave lenses?
Ans. Convex lenses are thicker in the middle and thinner at the edges. They converge the light rays that pass through them and form a real or virtual image depending on the position of the object. Concave lenses, on the other hand, are thinner in the middle and thicker at the edges. They diverge the light rays and always form a virtual image that is smaller than the object.
5. How does the refractive index affect the speed of light in a medium?
Ans. Refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a medium. The higher the refractive index of a medium, the slower the speed of light in that medium. The speed of light in a medium is inversely proportional to the refractive index of that medium.
