MICROBES IN HUMAN
WELFARE
INTRODUCTION
Microbes are present everywhere – in soil, water, air,
inside our bodies and that of other animals and plants
They are present even at sites such as deep inside the
geysers (thermal vents) where the temperature may be
as high as 100 degree Celsius, deep in the soil, under
the layers of snow several metres thick, and in highly
acidic environments
Microbes are diverse–protozoa, bacteria, fungi and
microscopic animal and plant viruses, viroids and
also prions that are proteinacious infectious agents

Microbes like bacteria and many fungi can be grown on
nutritive media to form colonies , that can be seen with the
naked eyes which are useful in studies on micro-
organisms.
several microbes are useful to man in diverse ways -
MICROBES IN HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS
MICROBES IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS
MICROBES IN SEWAGE TREATMENT
MICROBES IN PRODUCTION OF BIOGAS

FAQs on Microbes in Human Welfare PPT Biology Class 12

1. What are some examples of microbes that are beneficial to humans?
Ans. Some examples of beneficial microbes to humans include bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which help in digestion and boost the immune system. Fungi like Penicillium produce antibiotics that are used to treat various infections. Additionally, certain yeasts like Saccharomyces are used in the production of bread, beer, and wine.
2. How do microbes contribute to human welfare in the field of agriculture?
Ans. Microbes play a crucial role in agriculture by fixing atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic relationships with plants, making it available for their growth. They also help in decomposing organic matter, converting it into nutrients that can be absorbed by plants. Additionally, some microbes act as biocontrol agents, protecting crops from harmful pests and diseases.
3. Can microbes be used in waste management?
Ans. Yes, microbes are extensively used in waste management. They are employed in the process of bioremediation, where they break down and degrade organic pollutants present in waste materials. Microbes also help in the decomposition of organic waste in landfills and wastewater treatment plants, reducing the environmental impact of waste disposal.
4. How do microbes contribute to the production of antibiotics?
Ans. Microbes are the primary source of antibiotics. Certain bacteria and fungi produce antibiotics as a defense mechanism against other microorganisms. These antibiotics can be isolated and purified for use in treating bacterial infections in humans and animals. Examples include penicillin, streptomycin, and tetracycline.
5. Can microbes be used in the production of food?
Ans. Yes, microbes are widely used in the production of food. They are used in processes like fermentation, where they convert carbohydrates into various products. For example, yeast is used in bread-making to produce carbon dioxide, which causes the dough to rise. Bacteria are used in the production of yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products by converting lactose into lactic acid.
