Key Points of the Story
Detailed Summary
In early 1956, the author traveled to Southern Iraq and decided he wanted an otter as a pet instead of a dog, believing his home at Camusfearna, surrounded by water, would be perfect. A friend mentioned that otters were common in the Tigris marshes and often kept as pets by Arabs. While in Basra, the author experienced delays in receiving his mail, causing some worry. After finally getting his mail, he was surprised to find two Arabs with a sack containing an otter, sent by his friend. This marked the beginning of the author’s close bond with Mijbil, the otter.
Initially, Mijbil was distant, but soon warmed up, becoming playful and curious, especially loving water. He even learned to turn on the bathtub tap, showing his intelligence. As they spent more time together, Mijbil developed habits like playing with balls and marbles. The author faced challenges when trying to bring Mijbil back to England, especially with airline restrictions. Despite this, they managed to travel, with Mijbil causing some chaos on the plane but eventually settling down.
In London, Mijbil entertained himself with various toys and amused people during walks, though many mistook him for other animals. The story ends with a reflection on the unique bond between the author and Mijbil, highlighting the joy and adventures that come from unexpected friendships.
