FAQs on NCERT Textbook- Addition - Mathematics for Class 1: NCERT

1. What is addition and how is it defined in mathematics?
Ans. Addition is a basic operation in mathematics that combines two or more numbers to give a total. It is defined as the process of finding the sum of two or more numbers.
2. Can you explain the commutative property of addition?
Ans. The commutative property of addition states that changing the order of the numbers being added does not change the sum. For example, 2 + 3 is equal to 3 + 2.
3. What is the identity property of addition?
Ans. The identity property of addition states that adding zero to any number does not change the value of that number. In other words, the sum of any number and zero is equal to the original number itself.
4. How does carrying over work in addition?
Ans. Carrying over is a technique used in addition when the sum of two digits is greater than 9. In such cases, the units digit of the sum is written down, and the tens digit is carried over to the next column.
5. Are there any rules to follow while adding numbers with different signs?
Ans. Yes, there are rules to follow when adding numbers with different signs. If the signs of the numbers being added are the same, we add their absolute values and keep the common sign. If the signs are different, we subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger one and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
