We must remember that all active constructions cannot/ should not be transformed
into passive constructions mechanically, even if such transformation is possible.
Example: a) He is drinking water.
b) Water is being drunk by him
Though sentence (b) is grammatically correct, we do not write or speak such a
sentence. It is unnatural.
Hence it is necessary to keep in mind that the passive voice has certain legitimate
uses as discussed in A.2
Excerpts
1. The tea leaves are picked and left to dry in the sun.
2. 20 ml of the salt is taken in a test tube and heated over the flame of a Bunsen
burner.
3. Many villagers were adversely affected by the flash flood. It is estimated that

MAESAI (THAILAND). At least 74 people were killed in a strong earthquake
that struck Myanmar, state media said on Friday, while a series of aftershocks
have caused panic but only limited damage in Thailand and Laos.
The death toll from Thursday's 6.8 mgnitude tremor was expected to rise
slightly in Myanmar after 225 homes and nine government buildings were
destroyed. Over 100 people were injured, according to state television.
The quake sparked panic, but no major damage in other countries across
southeast Asia has been reported. An aftershock of an estimated magnitude of
5.5 rattled Thailand on Friday but caused limited damage, although residents
living in properties close to the epicentre were advised to leave their homes.

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Active Passive - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English Class 10

1. What is the concept of active and passive voice in English grammar?
Ans. In English grammar, active and passive voice are two different ways of expressing the same idea. In active voice, the subject performs the action, while in passive voice, the subject receives the action. For example, in the active voice sentence "I ate an apple," the subject "I" performs the action of eating. In the passive voice sentence "An apple was eaten by me," the subject "An apple" receives the action of being eaten.
2. How can we identify whether a sentence is in active or passive voice?
Ans. To identify whether a sentence is in active or passive voice, we need to look at the verb and the subject in the sentence. In active voice, the subject is the doer of the action, and the verb is in the active form. In passive voice, the subject is the receiver of the action, and the verb is in the passive form. Additionally, passive voice sentences often use the auxiliary verb "be" followed by the past participle of the main verb.
3. What are the reasons for using passive voice in writing?
Ans. Passive voice is used in writing for various reasons. Firstly, it can shift the focus from the doer of the action to the receiver of the action, which can be useful when the doer is unknown or unimportant. Secondly, it can create a more formal or impersonal tone in writing. Thirdly, passive voice can be used to emphasize the action or object rather than the doer. Lastly, passive voice is commonly used in scientific or technical writing to maintain objectivity and avoid personal pronouns.
4. How do we change a sentence from active voice to passive voice?
Ans. To change a sentence from active voice to passive voice, we follow these steps: 1. Identify the subject, verb, and object in the active sentence. 2. Move the object to the beginning of the sentence and make it the new subject. 3. Use the appropriate form of the auxiliary verb "be" followed by the past participle of the main verb. 4. If the active sentence has an indirect object, it can be included in the passive sentence using the preposition "by." 5. Make any necessary changes to the tense of the verb. 6. Optional: Include the doer of the action (if known) using the preposition "by."
5. What are some common mistakes to avoid when using active and passive voice?
Ans. When using active and passive voice, it is important to avoid common mistakes, such as: 1. Using passive voice unnecessarily, which can make sentences wordy and less clear. 2. Failing to include the doer of the action in a passive sentence when it is important or relevant. 3. Mixing active and passive voice within the same sentence, which can lead to confusion. 4. Incorrectly changing the tense of the verb when converting from active to passive voice. 5. Overusing passive voice, as it can make writing sound dull or lacking in action.
