Introduction to
Intelligence Research
1
Broad Mental Ability
Research on intelligence
suggests the existence of a
broad form of mental ability
called intelligence, which
encompasses specific abilities.
2
Multiple Intelligence
Concept
This idea evolved into the
concept of multiple
intelligence, proposing several
domains of intelligence that
influence children's learning
attributes.
3
Impact on Learning
Understanding these intelligence domains helps in comprehending how
children learn and develop various skills.

The general ability of intelligence comprises several specific abilities and capacities. These can be combined into three basic
functions: Learning, Recognizing Problems, and Solving Problems. These functions enable individuals to acquire knowledge, identify
issues in their environment, and develop useful solutions.
Adaptability
Ability to adapt to new environments
or changes
Knowledge Capacity
Capacity to acquire and retain
knowledge
Abstract Thought
Capacity for reasoning and abstract
thinking
Problem Solving
Ability to identify and solve problems
Effective Interaction
Ability to interact effectively with the
environment

Definitions and Theories of Intelligence
1
Uni-Factor Theory
Alfred Binet and T erman proposed that intelligence is a single, all-pervasive
capacity enabling adjustment to changing environments.
2
Two Factor Theory
Charles Spearman introduced the concept of 'g' (general intelligence) and 's'
(special intelligence) factors in 1904.
3
Primary Mental Abilities Theory
Louis Thurstone identified seven primary mental abilities, including verbal
comprehension and inductive reasoning.
4
Fluid and Crystallized Intelligence
Raymond Cattell and John Horn developed the theory of fluid (biological) and
crystallized (learned) intelligence in 1966.

Multiple Intelligence Theory
L i n g u i s t i c: It involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages and the capacity to use language
to accomplish certain goals. Writers, poets, lawyers and speakers are among those that have high linguistic intelligence.
M u s i c a l: It involves skill in the performance, composition and appreciation of musical patterns. Musicians and composers have
this intelligence in abundance.
L o g i c a l-Mathematical: It consists of the capacity to analyse problems logically, carry out mathematical operations and investigate
issues scientifically. This dimension of intelligence is associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.
S p a t i a l: It is the potential to recognise and use the patterns of wide spaces and more confined areas. Artists and designers have
more of this dimension of intelligence.
