Factors of Natural Numbers
Factors are the pair of natural numbers which give the
resultant number.
Example
24 = 12 × 2 = 6 × 4 = 8 × 3 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 = 24 × 1
Hence, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 are the factors of 24

Prime Factor Form
If we write the factors of a number in such a way that all the
factors are prime numbers then it is said to be a prime factor
form.
Example
The prime factor form of 24 is
24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3

Factors of Algebraic Expressions
Like any natural number, an algebraic expression is also the
product of its factors. In the case of algebraic expression, it is
said to be an irreducible form instead of prime factor form.
Example
7pq = 7 × p × q =7p × q = 7q × p = 7 × pq
These are the factors of 7pq but the irreducible form of it is
7pq = 7 × p × q

FAQs on PPT: Factorisation - Mathematics (Maths) Class 8

1. What is factorisation in mathematics?
Ans. Factorisation in mathematics is the process of breaking down a number or algebraic expression into its factors, which are numbers or expressions that can be multiplied together to get the original number or expression.
2. Why is factorisation important in mathematics?
Ans. Factorisation is important in mathematics because it helps in simplifying complex expressions, solving equations, finding common factors, and identifying prime numbers. It also plays a crucial role in various mathematical operations and proofs.
3. How can factorisation help in solving algebraic equations?
Ans. Factorisation can help in solving algebraic equations by breaking down the equation into simpler factors, making it easier to identify solutions or roots. It is particularly useful in solving quadratic equations and finding the values of variables.
4. What are the different methods of factorisation?
Ans. Some common methods of factorisation include the factorisation of numbers by division, factorisation of algebraic expressions by grouping, factorisation of quadratic expressions using the quadratic formula, and factorisation of trinomials using the AC method.
5. Can factorisation be applied to real-life problems outside of mathematics?
Ans. Yes, factorisation can be applied to real-life problems outside of mathematics, such as in computer science for data encryption, in chemistry for balancing chemical equations, and in economics for analyzing financial data. Factorisation helps in breaking down complex problems into simpler components for easier analysis and solution.
