Progressive Group Task (PGT): All about it | Preparation Tips for SSB Interview - CDS PDF Download

The Progressive Group Task (PGT) is a central part of the GTO task series. It's a challenging and intricate task that brings out hidden qualities in individuals. Candidates need to approach this task with great care and diligence. In this article, we will explain the entire PGT procedure and provide some essential tips.
These group exercises are designed to assess candidates' ability to work in teams and solve practical problems. They are leaderless exercises that require collaboration among group members and the use of supporting materials. Cooperation within the group is crucial. It's important to note that there are multiple solutions to these exercises, and even candidates with average intelligence can handle them if they remain calm and composed.

Progressive Group Task – PROCEDURE

The PGT consists of a series of tasks that gradually increase in difficulty, starting with an easy task and progressing to the most challenging one. Typically, the entire exercise takes around 40-45 minutes.

  • The GTO informs the candidates that they must transport a load from the start line to the finish line using supporting materials. He will indicate those lines to the candidates.
  • He will specify which materials or structures should not be touched and which areas are "out of bounds."
  • The GTO provides helping materials such as a wooden plank (phatta), a pole (balli), and ropes to overcome obstacles.
  • He explains the rules that must be followed during the obstacles.
  • After explaining all the rules, he invites candidates to ask any questions they may have.
  • Then, he leaves the group to complete the tasks on their own. Once the first obstacle is overcome, the GTO guides the group to the next, which will naturally be more difficult.
  • This process continues as the group tackles subsequent obstacles, and the GTO congratulates the group upon completing the task.

Progressive Group Task – RULES TO BE FOLLOWED

  • Colour rule: Structures are painted in different colours—Red, Blue, and White.
    • White: Both candidates and supporting materials can touch.
    • Blue: Only candidates can touch; supporting materials cannot.
    • Red: Off-limits for both candidates and supporting materials.
  • Areas in the PGT, such as mud surfaces and red-coloured structures, are out of bounds.
  • Rigidity rule: No two rigid supporting materials can be tied together. Instead, supporting materials can be tied to structures.
  • Rule of Infinity: The start and finish lines of the obstacle extend indefinitely. The group cannot cross these lines directly.
  • Distance rule: Jumping a distance greater than four feet is not allowed. Distances greater than four feet must be bridged using supporting materials.
  • Group and Load Rule: The entire group, including the last person, supporting materials, and load, must progress together at all times throughout the PGT.

Progressive Group Task – POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • Listen attentively to the GTO throughout the exercise. Pay close attention to his suggestions and indirect tips.
  • Do not break any rules. It's important to adhere to the rules as they are essential for conducting these tasks. Don't think you can outsmart the GTO.
  • Carefully observe the structures; the solutions are simple and require basic common sense.
  • The principles of cantilever or fulcrum can be applied during the tasks.
  • If you're unable to generate ideas, contribute by encouraging and cooperating with other group members.
  • Keep in mind that there are generally three solutions to each obstacle.
  • Take the initiative, be proactive, and take risks. There's no point in playing a secondary role within the group.
  • Maintain your focus and composure throughout the entire GTO exercise; don't let stress overwhelm you.
  • If you unintentionally break a rule, have the courage to admit it.
