Settlement Calculation

Figure 23.5 shows the e – log σv' plots for normally consolidated and overconsolidated clay for settlement calculation. For normally consolidated clay the settlement (S) can be determined as:

\[S={{{C_c}} \over {1 + {e_0}}}H{\log _{10}}\left( {{{{{\sigma '}_{v0}} + \Delta {{\sigma '}_v}} \over {{{\sigma '}_{v0}}}}} \right)\]                    (23.4)

where H is total thickness of the soil layer.

For over-consolidated clay:  Case 1: σ'v0+Δσ'v < σ'c

\[S={{{C_s}} \over {1 + {e_0}}}H{\log _{10}}\left( {{{{{\sigma '}_{v0}} + \Delta {{\sigma '}_v}} \over {{{\sigma '}_{v0}}}}} \right)\]                       (23.5)

Case 2: σ'v0 < σ'c < σ'v0+Δσ'v

\[S={{{C_s}} \over {1 + {e_0}}}H{\log _{10}}\left( {{{{{\sigma '}_c}} \over {{{\sigma '}_{v0}}}}} \right)\]   +  \[{{{C_c}} \over {1 + {e_0}}}H{\log _{10}}\left( {{{{{\sigma '}_{v0}} + \Delta {{\sigma '}_v}} \over {{{\sigma '}_c}}}} \right)\]                           (23.6)

where Cs is the swelling index.

FAQs on Settlement Calculation - Consolidation Test - Consolidation of Soil, Soil Mechanicses - Soil Mechanics Notes- Agricultural Engineering

1. What is settlement calculation in soil consolidation?
Ans. Settlement calculation in soil consolidation refers to the process of determining the amount of vertical compression or settlement that occurs in a soil mass due to the application of a load. It is an important aspect in geotechnical engineering to understand and predict the settlement behavior of soil.
2. How is consolidation test performed on soil?
Ans. The consolidation test is performed on soil to determine its compressibility and settlement characteristics. The test involves applying a constant load to a soil sample and measuring the corresponding settlement over time. The test typically follows a standardized procedure, where the load is gradually applied and the settlement is recorded at specific time intervals.
3. What is the significance of consolidation test in soil mechanics?
Ans. The consolidation test is significant in soil mechanics as it helps in understanding the time-dependent settlement behavior of soils under loading. It provides valuable information about the compressibility, consolidation properties, and potential settlement of soil, which is crucial in designing foundations for structures, assessing stability, and predicting long-term settlement.
4. What factors influence soil consolidation?
Ans. Several factors influence soil consolidation, including the soil type, initial void ratio, applied load, drainage conditions, and time. The compressibility and settlement characteristics of soil are affected by these factors, and understanding their influence is essential in accurately predicting and calculating settlement in soil.
5. Can consolidation test results be used to estimate settlement in actual field conditions?
Ans. Yes, consolidation test results can be used to estimate settlement in actual field conditions. By analyzing the consolidation characteristics of a soil sample in the laboratory, engineers can determine the compressibility and settlement behavior of the soil. These results can then be extrapolated and applied to field conditions to estimate settlement under similar load and drainage conditions. However, it is important to consider site-specific factors and limitations while applying laboratory test results to field situations.
