April 1 to June 15, 1943, The Diary of Anne Frank Summary | Class 10 Novels PDF Download

THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 1943

  • All of the Secret Annex’s "protectors" are sick in one way or another.
  • Anne’s father is nervous about some important business-related talks going on downstairs, so they listen in, with their faces pressed against the floor. Anne gets so bored she falls asleep.

FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1943

  • Anne’s mother wants to say prayers with Anne, but she refuses. Now she’s in trouble for making her mother feel bad. But Anne says she can’t love her mom because she thinks her mother is cold to her.
  • Anne realizes that her behavior actually does bother her mother; her mom cried half the night.
  • Anne is expected to apologize to her mother but she won’t.

TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 1943

  • Everyone is angry with everyone else and the "protectors" are still sick.
  • The food situation is getting worse. They’re eating spinach or lettuce for lunch and rotting potatoes.

SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1943

  • It’s Mr. Dussel's birthday and he acts all childish and excited about it.
  • Mr. Dussel turns out to be pretty selfish. He’s hiding all kinds of good food (like bread and cheese), which he keeps for himself. Anne thinks he acts ungrateful considering they saved him. He also isn’t at all generous with the protectors.
  • Martial law has been declared in Holland.

SUNDAY, MAY 2, 1943

  • Anne concludes that the members of the Secret Annex are living in paradise compared to other Jews.
  • At the same time, everything (and everyone) is dirty. Clothes are falling apart, sheets go unwashed, and clothes are too small.
  • She wonders if the family will be able to recover financially after the war. They used to be pretty well off.

SUNDAY, MAY 2, 1943 (SECOND ENTRY)

  • Anne uses this entry to talk about how everyone in the Secret Annex views the war.
  • Mr. van Daan: thinks the war won’t end until the end of 1943. Anne feels like that’s a long time.
  • Mrs. van Daan: wants to get false ID papers made, not considering how much money that would cost.
  • Mr. Frank: optimistic.
  • Mr. Dussel: defends His Majesty and expects never to be contradicted.

TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1943

  • Anne witnesses an air battle between German and British planes. The Allied soldiers (British) have to parachute out of their burning plane.
  • The Secret Annex crew has to burn their garbage every day rather than put it in a trash can, since they don’t want office workers who don’t know about them to find out.
  • The young people of Holland are all being forced to join the Germans or do hard labor in Germany. Anne wonders what will become of Holland.
  • The guns are loud and terrifying at night. Mrs. van Daan is terrified, and, since her husband doesn’t comfort her well enough, she goes to sleep with Mr. Dussel (!).
  • Anne finds this so hysterical that the guns don’t bother her anymore that night.

SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 1943

  • Anne turns fourteen and receives a birthday poem from Pim (her nickname for her father).
  • The poem is in the diary and it’s very sweet. Basically her dad acknowledges that they’ve all been a nagging pain to Anne and asks her to please put up with them. The poem shows that he sees what’s going on with her pretty well.
  • Anne also gets a big fat Greek and Roman mythology book, which she’s psyched about.

TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 1943

  • One of the protectors, Mr. Voskuijl, has terminal cancer. Everyone in the Secret Annex misses him.
  • Everybody in Holland has to turn in their radios to the officials. The Annex group, however, is getting a secret small one. People all throughout the country are trying to get hold of old radios that they can turn in while secretly keeping another one on hand. Without a radio, they can’t access British war news and will only hear German propaganda.
