August 14 to September 29, 1942, The Diary of Anne Frank Summary | Class 10 Novels PDF Download

FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1942

  • The van Daans arrive with their cat, Mouschi, on July 13th.
  • Anne describes Peter as a shy, gawky, soft boy of 16. She doesn’t think she can expect much from him in terms of friendship.
  • Mr. van Daan tells the story about how he fooled the Franks’ upstairs neighbors and led them to believe that the Franks had escaped into Switzerland. He told the neighbors not to breathe a word about it to anyone. Of course, the neighbors told everyone... which the Franks find amusing.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1942

  • The Secret Annex is properly hidden with a swinging bookcase.
  • Anne decides to give herself a holiday from school until September.
  • Mr. van Daan treats Anne like a baby, which really bothers her.
  • Peter lies around all lazy and the only eventful thing he’s done is to wash his hair.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1942

  • Predictably, when eight people are cramped into a small space, they stop getting along. And pretty quickly, too. For example, Mrs. van Daan is angry that her dishes have to be used instead of Mrs. Frank’s.
  • Margot and Peter are allowed to read nearly all the books that Mr. Kleiman lends, but the grownups hold back one book on women. Peter’s very interested in this book, so he manages to sneak it.
  • After he is caught, he sneaks it again.
  • Mrs. van Daan asks Mrs. Frank what she thinks and Anne’s mom says that Margot is more intelligent and mature than Peter and that is why she should be allowed to read more mature books.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1942

  • Mrs. van Daan is unbearable—she’s always getting mad at Anne for talking so much, and Mrs. van Daan is always trying to weasel her way out of doing the dishes.
  • Anne begins home school. She’s trying to learn French, and she’s helping her dad improve his Dutch (remember, her parents are from Germany and their first language is German).
  • Anne is discussed by the parents and everybody decides she is a complete "ignoramus," so she tries to study harder.
  • Anne suddenly realizes that she does not have sufficient clothes for the winter so she starts knitting a wool jumper.
  • Mrs. van Daan shows up and wants to peek at Anne’s diary, which of course Anne refuses.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1942

  • Anne discusses Peter with the van Daans, saying she does not like the way he is always patting her on the cheek. They ask if she can’t love him like a brother, since they apparently think he likes her as a sister.
  • Pim writes a letter to a man who had hidden some things for the Franks. They insert it in an envelope that came from southern Zeeland, so that it looks like the Franks are out of the country. Quite clever.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1942

  • Anne and her mother have a fight and Anne ends up crying. She feels like her mom doesn’t know her at all. Anne doesn’t understand Margot either.
  • Mrs. van Daan keeps hiding more of her things and being all moody.
  • Mrs. van Daan likes to criticize Anne, especially at the dinner table, and talk about how poorly Anne is being raised.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1942

  • More fussing and fighting between the adults. Anne believes she is often the subject of discussion—especially about how badly she is being raised.
  • Anne is tired of being frequently criticized and wonders if she is really as bad as everybody says.
  • Anne says you never really know anybody until you’ve had a fight with them. Until then, you can’t judge their character.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1942

  • Because there is no shower or bathtub, each person develops their own "place" to try to take a private bath, using a washtub.
