Solution: 3
Split 18 into 1 and 8. Divide 18 by 6: it goes 3 times (6 × 3 = 18), nothing left. Answer is 3.

Division by 9 (Quick Trick with 9)
Q4. 27 ÷ 9 = ? (How many 9s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 3, remainder 0
Start with 2, add 2 + 7 = 9, but 27 ÷ 9 = 3 exactly. So, 3 with nothing left.
Q5. 43 ÷ 9 = ? (How many 9s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 4, remainder 7
Bring down 4. Add 4 + 3 = 7. So, 4 with 7 left over.
Q6. 65 ÷ 9 = ? (How many 9s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 7, remainder 2
Bring down 6. Add 6 + 5 = 11 (1 more 9 makes 7), 11 - 9 = 2. So, 7 with 2 left.

Division by Numbers Near a Base (Near 99 or 88)
Q7. 234 ÷ 99 = ? (How many 99s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 2, remainder 36
Split 234 into 2 and 34. Bring 2 down, add 2 + 34 = 36. So, 2 with 36 left.
Q8. 136 ÷ 88 = ? (How many 88s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 1, remainder 48
Split 1 and 36. Bring 1 down. 88 is 12 less than 100, so 1 × 12 = 12, 36 - 12 = 24, but total left is 136 - 88 = 48. Answer is 1, remainder 48.
Q9. 215 ÷ 98 = ? (How many 98s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 2, remainder 19
Bring 2 down. Double 2 = 4, add to 15 = 19. So, 2 with 19 left.

Straight Division (Divide with a Flag)
Q10. 75 ÷ 52 = ? (How many 52s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 1, remainder 23
5 into 7 is 1, 7 - 5 = 2. Then 1 × 2 (flag) = 2, 25 - 2 = 23. So, 1 with 23 left.
Q11. 96 ÷ 43 = ? (How many 43s, and what’s left?)
Solution: 2, remainder 10
4 into 9 is 2, 9 - 8 = 1. Then 2 × 3 (flag) = 6, 16 - 6 = 10. So, 2 with 10 left.
Q12. You have 28 candies to share equally with 4 friends. How many does each get, and how many are left?
Solution: 7, remainder 0
Split 28 into 2 and 8. Divide by 4: 28 ÷ 4 = 7 (4 × 7 = 28). Each gets 7, nothing left!
