Q3: Word Problems

(i) A can of soup is 350 ml and Jack mixes in a can full of water with the soup. What is the total volume?
Ans:

(ii) A carton of milk has 2 L. If we pour the milk into four mugs evenly, what is the volume of milk in each mug?
Ans: 
If a carton of milk (2 L) is poured into four mugs evenly, each mug will contain 2 L / 4 = 0.5 L of milk.

(iii) In a water bottle, there is 3 L of water. If the capacity of the bottle is 9 L, how much more water is needed to fill up the bottle?
Ans: 
To fill up the water bottle to its capacity of 9 L, you need 9 L (capacity) - 3 L (water already in the bottle) = 6 L more water.

(iv) A fish tank has the capacity of 10 L. If the tank is filled up half way, how much water is in the tank?
Ans:
If a fish tank has a capacity of 10 L and is filled up halfway, there is 10 L (capacity) / 2 = 5 L of water in the tank.

(v) A mega bottle of soda is 5 L. There are 3 students, and each drinks 1*A L. How much is left in the bottle?
Ans:
If a mega bottle of soda is 5 L, and each of the 3 students drinks 1 * A L, then the total amount consumed is 3 * 1 L = 3 L. The remaining amount in the bottle is 5 L (original) - 3 L (consumed) = 2 L.

(vi) There are two measuring cups on the counter. One contains 13 fluid ounces oflemon juice and the other contains 12 fluid ounces oflemon juice. How much lemon juice is there in total?
Ans: 
The total amount of lemon juice is 13 fluid ounces (first cup) + 12 fluid ounces (second cup) = 25 fluid ounces.

(vii) 40 ml of milk was added to the dough for a loaf of bread. If the loaf was then sliced into 8 slices, how much milk was in each slice?
Ans:
Each slice of the loaf contains 40 ml / 8 slices = 5 ml of milk.

(viii) There was 15 gallons of water in a water machine. After filling up a 2-gallon pitcher and a 6-gallon water tank, how much water is left?
Ans:
After filling up the 2-gallon pitcher and the 6-gallon water tank, a total of 2 gallons + 6 gallons = 8 gallons of water were used. There are 15 gallons (initial) - 8 gallons (used) = 7 gallons of water left.

(ix) A bottle oflotion is 500 ml. Each pump will pump out 7 ml of lotion. How much lotion is left after 2 pumps?
Ans: After 2 pumps, 2 pumps * 7 ml/pump = 14 ml of lotion were used. There are 500 ml (initial) - 14 ml (used) = 486 ml of lotion left.

(x) A soda comes in two sizes. The large bottle is 24 fluid ounces and the smaller bottle is 18 fluid ounces. How much less juice is there in the smaller bottle?
Ans: The smaller bottle has 24 fluid ounces (large) - 18 fluid ounces (small) = 6 fluid ounces less juice than the large bottle.

(xi) Justin made some mashed potato. For every two potatoes he boiled, he added 2 ounces of milk. Ifhe boiled 16 potatoes, how much milk did he add to the mashed potato?
Ans: 
For 16 potatoes, Justin added 16 potatoes / 2 potatoes = 8 sets of 2 potatoes. Therefore, he added 8 sets * 2 ounces/set = 16 ounces of milk to the mashed potato.
