Ans. Nitrogen fixation is the process in which atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted into a usable form, such as ammonia (NH3) or nitrate (NO3-), by certain bacteria. These bacteria can be free-living in the soil or symbiotic, forming a mutualistic relationship with leguminous plants or other nitrogen-fixing organisms.

3. What is nitrification in the nitrogen cycle?

Ans. Nitrification is the process in which ammonia (NH3) is converted into nitrite (NO2-) and then into nitrate (NO3-). This conversion is carried out by two types of bacteria: ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which convert ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), which further convert nitrite to nitrate.

5. What is denitrification in the nitrogen cycle?

Ans. Denitrification is the process in which nitrates (NO3-) are converted back into atmospheric nitrogen (N2) by denitrifying bacteria. This occurs in oxygen-depleted environments, such as waterlogged soils or sediments. Denitrification helps to balance the nitrogen cycle by returning nitrogen to the atmosphere, completing the cycle.
