Q4: Read the given case and answer the questions that follow:       (2023)
CONSERVATION OF ENERGY RESOURCES
Energy is a basic requirement for economic development. Every sector of the national economy - agriculture, industry, transport, commercial and domestic - needs inputs of energy. The economic development plans implemented since independence necessarily required increasing amounts of energy to remain operational. As a result, consumption of energy In all forms has been steadily rising all over the country. In this background, there is an urgent need to develop a sustainable path of energy development. Promotion of energy conservation and increased use of renewable energy sources are the twin planks of sustainable energy. India is presently one of the least energy-efficient countries in the world. We have to adopt a cautious approach for the judicious use of our limited energy resources. For example, as concerned citizens, we can do our bit by using public transport systems instead of individual vehicles; switching off electricity when not in use, using power-saving devices and using non-conventional sources of energy. At last "Energy Saved is energy produced".
(i) Why is sustainable energy a key to sustainable development?
(ii) Why is consumption of energy rising in all over India?
(iii) Explain 'Energy saved is energy produced.'

FAQs on Previous Year Questions: Minerals & Energy Resources

1. What are the main types of minerals that appear in CBSE Class 10 exams?
Ans. Minerals are classified into metallic minerals (containing metals like iron, copper, and aluminium) and non-metallic minerals (like limestone, mica, and phosphate). Ferrous minerals contain iron, while non-ferrous minerals don't. Understanding these categories helps students answer previous year questions on mineral distribution and industrial uses across India's geography.
2. Why do certain energy resources like coal and petroleum get more weightage in board exams?
Ans. Coal and petroleum dominate exam questions because they're India's primary conventional energy sources, accounting for major economic and environmental concerns. Previous year questions frequently test students on coal mining regions (Chhattisgarh, Odisha), petroleum reserves, and their role in India's development. These topics directly link geography, economics, and sustainability-core exam themes.
3. How do I identify mineral-rich regions in India for exam answers?
Ans. Mineral distribution in India follows geological patterns: iron ore concentrates in Odisha and Chhattisgarh; copper in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh; bauxite in Odisha and Gujarat. Previous year questions often ask students to map resources or explain regional advantages. Refer to mind maps and flashcards to memorise state-wise mineral locations quickly for exam preparation.
4. What's the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy resources in Class 10 Social Studies?
Ans. Non-renewable resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas) deplete with use, while renewable resources (solar, wind, hydroelectric) regenerate naturally. Exam questions test this distinction alongside India's energy crisis and sustainability challenges. Students often confuse fossil fuels with non-conventional energy; this conceptual clarity is essential for scoring marks on energy resource questions.
5. Which previous year questions about minerals and energy appear most frequently in CBSE exams?
Ans. Recurring exam topics include: mineral classification, India's major mining regions, coal production and distribution, petroleum exploration, and renewable versus non-renewable comparisons. Questions often combine map-based identification with written explanations. Reviewing actual previous year questions helps students recognise patterns and prepare targeted answers for both short and long-answer formats.
